I am perplexed and confused.
Yea, so is everyone else, but they found some one to work it out.
Despite all your excellent entries - none of you got it right - but we know a man who did.
Richard Taylor was one of a number of lawyers at the law firm Olswang who spent some of their valuable time on the puzzle yesterday - and found that the key to the puzzle was a mathematical progression known as the Fibonacci sequence.

And the solution?
Smithy Code Jackie Fisher who are you Dreadnought
The key lies in the fact that the judge is a keen military historian.
Far from being an arcane guide in the quest for the Holy Grail, it turned out to be a tribute to the judge's great hero - Admiral John "Jackie" Fisher.
He admitted he had inserted the code for his own amusement and it had nothing to do with the case. He said: "I hate crosswords and do not do Sudoku as I do not have the patience".
Not as intresting as i had hoped, but we can all sleep soundly now.
