Who is getting it?
Im totally hyped about this game. Morrowind was awesome when you got past the masses of text and the crapy combat system. Oblivion has done away with alot of the trash in morrowind and improved all the good stuff.
Fancy being a cold blooded assassin? a thief? a mage? a gladiator? a vampire? Hell just about anything..
With raidiant AI, it looks freeking awesome.
Combat looks hawt too.

I have officialy spent the last year or so waiting for oblivion, i have gathered ALOT of articles rewievs and one prewiew, all the videos includig the new"countdown" videos (i have also watched the famed "teh german vid") waiting exited for the next one to arrive. And i have also spent alot of time on the elderscrolls messageboards finding out alot about: lore, combat system, equipment, skills, guilds ect. So, im getting it the day its out or else i will freak out. This game is going to be legendary!

Mar 20, 2006, @ 11:56 AM
yes it will be, in oblivion you dont have to press a button to "ready spell" like in morrowind so that it will be a better magic-combat system. and if you watch some of the movies you will se that magic wands and AoE arrows works like a rocketluncher!
edit: lets all play Arena (http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm) untill the sky turns red (wtf!?) and wolfs howl to the sky (WTF!?) to celebrate oblivions arrival ^-^

My friend has Oblivion, I've played it. Woot for me, it's pretty sex. The only bad thing is that mudcrabs looks like crabs now, not like, you know mudcrabs.
But, yeah, I stayed up for the 12 hour marathon on Gamespot, totally worth it.

So far impressed with the updated skills/perks/mini games, that ive read in the manual. The bonus dvd was cool but short, and there are some nice art sections in it.

You mean they were dumbed down for the 360... you can't bulk sell, or even see any decent portion of your inventory at a time.
Not being able to name your saves annoys me a bit too, but meh, it's certainly still fun and the combat isnt nearly as boring as morrowind.
They haven't realy fixed the broken skill system though it seems.

Well, now you can only train 5 ranks per level, so you can't abuse the system as much. Before you could start the game, kill a couple Dark Brotherhood guys sell their armour for massive amounts of money, then *BAM* level 20.

This game looks so cute. I'm gunna get it for the 360, yall know if 360 players can play with the PC players? I saw some vids yesterday and what Marb said about the jumping and swimming made me giggle cuz it's so true.
Quietus
Mar 24, 2006, @ 03:21 PM
Are you serious? It has zero MP. There is no point in even getting it for the 360, since you can use a 360 controller with a PC, and you can download mods on the PC, while you can't download them for the 360.
As for the game, I'm loving it. I just wish there was some diversity between the "specials" for weapons, and a bigger difference between one handed and two handed.
Also now all monsters (excluding most unique NPCs) scale with your character level (to a certain limit), and the overall difficulty is quite hard. You couldn't kill anyone with decent loot at level 1, 5, or even 10. So most of that cheese is eliminated. Also keeps it challenging as you go (harder in some aspects too).
My main beefs are how much you have to repair (some of the shit I'm fighting now brings some of my armor down to 0, from 125 in a single fight, and weapon to half).
And that mage type enemies spend most of the fight buffing, then throw one or two weak ass spells that don't even faze me. The melee monsters are the ones I even have a challenge with, especially Undead Warriors for some reason (and just wait till you get to fight the Undead Blades, hardest in the game to bring down so far, easily). Archery is even worse off than magery. Hold up shield, block first arrow, charge and begin distributing beatdown. At least the mage gets in one or two buffs.

Mar 24, 2006, @ 04:27 PM
Try playing on hardest setting :)
So far i love it, i went for a orc warrior type to get into it first before i go down my assassin/thief char. Fighting can be inbetween mashing the attack button to realy getting a good grip on timing attacks and using magic to back it up.
The interface hasnt been 'dumbed down' its far more streamlined, and easy to use after 30 minutes play. It does have to niggles, like the bulk selling on some items, and placing things in-out of chests etc. pysics is realy good, npcs great and the graphics are cool.
The major problem i have is my fx5950 is just not good enough to play it reasonably smooth. Im at 1024, with all the detail at lowest, and out doors it chuggs to a stop, indoors is fine, but combat can be a bit slow somtimes. Im gonna spend a long time tonight tweeking the .ini file to find the best results. But it looks like im gonna have to blow £250 on a nice new 7800gt :P

I didnt take block as a skill did you quietus? Blocking is uber when you get some of the perks, atm i take a fair bit of damage throught blocking. And the casters will get a hell of alot harder as you level up :)

Got the game yesterday and played it for half an hour. So far so good in the newbie dungeon. Only complain is the lack of tool tips in the inventory and stats screens. Can't wait to play more on the weekend!

Mar 25, 2006, @ 12:10 AM
Yeah I got block. Still, the undead blades are the hardest monsters I've found anywhere.
The hardest casters I've found are Will O The Wisp, thankfully I've only found them scattered outdoors.

I'm liking it so far.
Definitly the funniest moment I've had is one quest from the Dark Brotherhood. I had a mark to kill, cept the point was to make it look like an accident. So intest of outright killing him i snuck into his house, waited 5 hours for the right time in a tiny ass crawlhole (not unlike those theives who wait in you attic) and then loosed some fastenings on a mounted minotaur head, which promptly fell and killed him. His bodyguard rushed over and stood dumbfounded as I snuck out the door and returned to the santcuary.
Now that was fun, definitely not as fun as another dark brotherhood quest (Locked in a house with 6 people, killing them one by one, and watching them all go fucking nuts with fear. I was laughing so hard at the end b/c I had it down to 2 people. One guy who was a former soldier, who actually went and GOT his armor and weapons from a chest once it was down to 2 people which didn't help him... and a small and frail old women. The women WOULD NOT leave the soldier because she was so fucking scared and trusted him.... until she went to sleep. I purposely kept her for last.. was awesome).
But what makes it so fucking hilarious is that 4 days later (real time, not game time), I'm back in the town for another mark and I go to rent a room at an inn. As I walk in there is sitting at the table, drunk off his ass, none other than the bodyguard sobbing and yelling "NOOOO Bealins dead... I loved him... nooooo!"
Absolute hilarity.

Yeah the continuity that's built in and the interconnectedness between NPC's is very impressive.
What I meant by broken skill system is that you pretty much HAVE to select a character with a race that doesn't give you any bonusses to the skills you actualy want to train (in morrowind you had to select a class that gave you no bonusses too, but that's been rectified... in a way), otherwise you gimp your max level. You level by gaining a number of skill points (now to your prime skills only, so at least that's fixed now), so the higher your skills start, the fewer you can potentialy gain before maxing out, and the lower the number of levels that you can gain in the long term.

Lol I went for that immediately.
Dark Elf (+destruction/agility by nature) - Templar (Custom Class)
Birthsign: The Thief (Increased Agility for Marksmanship power.)
Major Skills:
Athletics
Blade
Destruction
Acrobatics
Light Armor
Marksmanship
Sneak - multiplying dmg ftw.
So basically I fire an arrow, and if they aren't dead yet I cast an On Target spell.. and then On Touch spell as they get too close or slap them silly with an enchanted blade harr.

Well, I've clocked 33 hours on it, started my good character Friday. I've mastered two skills. My acrobatics is at something crazy with the boots of springheel Jak on, something like 133. Let me tell you, sneaking in Daedric as never been this much fun, also, jumping across water.
But quest-wise the best I've done so far is The Ultimate Heist, and some of the Daedra quests. You should all go to the shrine of Nocturn.
But overall I'm pissed at the lack of an enchanting skill, and spell making. Also, polearms and crossbows would be nice. They should scratch the fast travel system, I liked siltstrides. And they should vary the architecture more, I always liked Halaluu and Telvani more than Imperial.
Also, I've havn't done any story quests, other then freeing Kvatch and taking dude-guy to Cloud Ruler temple.

Yeah especially when you get higher, and every other attack can stagger you, even when they do two damage. I believe I have hit the armor cap in full enchanted Daedric. Everything hits me for 1-2, and they still stagger me all over the place. Destruction magic at high levels is completely stupid. Some spells take 800, 1000, even more magicka to cast, and no one can get that much in a pool to begin with. And then the spell does something shitty like 80 damage (most fights would require 2-3, or more casts).
BTW Sunlight is only bad if you haven't fed for 24 hours. Vampirism in oblivion is different than other games/sources. You only get the vampire bonuses when you don't feed (this includes vulnerability to sunlight). And with the more blood you drink, the more human you become.

I dont know how you did the whole thing, but at the end of mine, the drunk alcoholic dude and the rich guy were the only 2 left alive, and i went and talked to the drunk and hes like "dude its just the 3 of us left and i know you didnt do it, we need to kill him before he kills us all!!!" And he grabs a weapon and pwns the rich guy, and then i pwned him, was great.
Oh and if you thought undead blades are hard (i killed them pretty easilly) wait til you fight Dread Zombies. I tried fighting one and he killed me, my assasin, and my summoned flame atronach. Oh well, time to run through the whole thing invisibile... again... so overpowered.

Mar 30, 2006, @ 12:56 PM
You can get it as you get higher. Around level 25 random enemies started wearing it (bandits, vampires etc), and if you keep leveling past that it gets sold in stores.
Dwarven is random too, just part of the progression.
As far as heavy armor goes its pretty much like this, though I might be missing one or two types:
Iron < Steel < Fine Iron < Fine Steel < Silver < Dwarven < Ebony < Daedric
Daedric is the best for weapons and shields too.
Light armor best is glass, followed by elven, followed by mithril.
Unique NPCs don't random spawn gear though, so you could go figure out how to kill Umbra at low levels and get her gear.
Umbra's sword (one of the best easily, I still haven't found base damage higher).
And her armor is all custom ebony, only slightly worse than Daedric.
Just don't use one of the lame strategies for beating her. :)
Bentusi
Mar 30, 2006, @ 01:05 PM
i fully suggest that anybody good with destruction create the "telekinetic explosion" spell
shock damage 1
AOE 100ft
everything not nailed down in a shop or house goes FLYING in all directions, it gets even better when you kill off most of the guards in a town, drag their bodies to 1 spot, then cast it on that and watch them go flying!

Quietus
Mar 30, 2006, @ 02:19 PM
That sounds like it might implode some computers. :P
And yeah destruction is near useless at higher levels.
1000+ mana for a 70 damage spell. No character can get enough base to cast that once, and most fights would need several casts of that to get it done. But I'm sure it will be fixed in time.

I beat her at 8. It was hard, but I just fought. I think I only one because of my high agility (no knockdowns) and the large amount of potions I carry at all times.

Wheres umbra at?
And my guy is pretty pimp, dark elf, im a listener, and conjurer, so ive pretty much got myself a party consisting of me, my assassin bitch, and my conjured creature which is usually either a fire atronach or a daedra.
And cloaking is still stupid overpowered.
And my main weapon is a dwarven claymore that i used one of the oblviion gate stones on so it causes 20 health damage per hit, i just sneak up behind someone, summon my daedra/atronach, sneak attack from behind with the claymore for 6x damage bonus, and then do like 2 sidestep swings and its gg to anything.

2bit, the fun begins when you steal all the food and replace it with poison apples.....
have i remarked yet that my character is not a nice guy?
Do those actually work? I took all the food out of a room and replaced a guard's food with a poison apple and he did'nt do anything after he ate it. It took him two hours or so to eat and when he was done he just sat there until his shift ended.

I beat her at 8. It was hard, but I just fought. I think I only one because of my high agility (no knockdowns) and the large amount of potions I carry at all times.
I would break into houses at night, steal all the food and make potions out of it, then I would steal all the other shit (clothes, silverware) and fence it.
For a thief at level 8 it would be near impossible. She blocks almost everything, and at level 8 she would be lopping off a fourth or more of your health with each swing...

what!!!!? umbra is in oblivion too!? lol!? now as a female!? wtf!? i dident hit him so hard! its rumored that "caius cossades" from morrowind is in oblivion (the game) somewhere, i recently found a guy from morrowind, he helped build that settlement in soulstheim (bloodmoon) that was realy cool. im stuck on a DB mission atm, where the quest is to kill that rude bastard in prison! but its hard, i got outside the sewers and heard the guards talk there, its just to hard to sneak around them... any hints n tips would be fine.
btw: i looove the havoc fysic, when i rob houses (i have robed all the houses in burma i think, im going for chorrol now) i rip the stuff i dont want down from the shelves so it LOOKS robbed aswell ^^
btw2: the items you find is allways imba ^^ it should be harder to find good items.
edit: btw3: make a oblivion club, tlsc division or something.

Well first its a SP game, wouldn't make much of a division. :P
Most of the items you find arent superpowered, except for Umbras items at low level.
To beat that dark brotherhood mission, wait for the guards to stop talking, sneak past, then there will be a guard on the stairs. Wait for him to turn his back and move up on the right, when he turns again, jump up behind him and continue on. Easy from there.

It's single player. I believe the purpose of a club is to play games with the other club members.
Morrowind had a LAN mod, with limited functionality. The only thing I saw of my friend was his head, and it was sitting on the ground underneath a table when he was in another area. So, unless they changed the way the game handles the player I doubt you'll see any multiplayer.

yup you get a horse 5mins into the main quest. Get some repair hammers and repair your gear on your own. Only enchanted gear requires a vendor repair (you can do it as a armour perk). Sure being a mage is cool, the only downsides are you can only have 1 spell selected to cast, so switching spells can be a bit of a pain during combat, and you cant poision your spells.

Go to the stables and steal a horse.
And magic sucks from my experience so far. My next character will be either a orc or nord warrior, those 2 handed battleaxes and mauls are nuts, and heavy armor seems ridiculous.
From my experience, these are l33t skills:
Conjuration is extremely 4tw.
Illusion magic is insane, expecially invisible, its my highest skill at the moment cause i use it all the time.
Blade skill of course.
Restoration and Mysticism are also crucial for the buffs and healing.
So my next char will have
Heavy armor
conjuration
illusion
blade
blunt
restoration
mysticism
I think... maybe block instead of blunt.

You can also get Shadowmere from a quest. A Unicorn in the wild (note that it gets pissed easily, and kills everything in sight). Also, every horse at every towns stable is different, some are faster, some are stronger, etc. If you steal a horse you can't keep it though, it will simply wander off while you are in a dungeon/town/whatever.
And the only skill that really seems broken atm is Destruction magic. I highly recommend you don't take it, until there is a fix for it.
As for the faces, the reason you can't make a "normal" human face is because there are no humans in that game. Each of the races has a distinct look, and none of them are really 100% human. What I don't like is their options for facial hair. Looks completely retarded. Oh my nord has a beard, I'll just color that region of the face brown/black/blond/white with a magic marker.
Drunk, you might drop Blade and pickup another offensive weapon or Armorer. Blunt weapons deal more damage, and at 75 Armorer you can repair weapons and armor past 100, allowing them to deal more damage and offer more protection (it really does make a difference). With all that magic goodness you shouldn't need a wall to hide behind anyway.
Should always consider Light Armor though, at 100 it offers the same protection that Heavy Armor does, through its perk (with the benefit here being more inventory room because of the lightweight armor).

destruction magic is ok, combine it with blade or whatever and it's very nice.

the fact that you can only have one active spell at a time is stupid... you should be able to hot key 10 of the damn things... and when you press the hotkey, it should just CAST....
also, 3d person seems a little wonky.... I don't know... I was playing thief 3 before i got oblivion and it's 3d person is much more natural... There's also not enough interface differences in the class construction.
Each inteface should be specialized for a given class. I think the standard oblivion interface is fine for a warrior... but it lacks the proper sighting and zooming features you'd need for a ranger... and I'm afraid I'm spoiled when it comes to thieves at this point... the thief 3 interface is SOOO good. The only problem with thief 3 is that 'normal' is really easy... you have to put it on hard for the game to make sense... otherwise you can run up to someone that wants to catch you... dance in front of them for two minutes and then duck into a shadow and they'll just give up saying "must have been nothing"...
anyway, the game looks interesting... haven't really played it for more then a hour or so... so I don't know that much about it... I'm too heavily addicted to T3 at this point...

You can zoom in with bows, you just need high enough skill to do so.
And no its powerful enough, just later in the game monsters have quite a large amount of HP (as you would expect, plus it scales with difficulty). A spell that does 70 direct damage costs 1000+ magicka to use, before skill is factored in. More powerful ones cost more. Even if you could reduce it by half (you cant), no character in the game can get enough magicka to cast it once, and even then you would need more than one to finish the job.
And that isn't even counting in resistances.
You can hotkey spells and abilities, you would have to press 1 for fireball or whatever, then C to cast it, 2 for invisibility, C to cast it, etc.

I LOVE IT! Everytime the game gets to some long drawn out bit that will just piss me off... I slip on the cloak and a disapear.... and move at about twice the normal speed... the enemy just stands there going "huh" as they get burned, frozen, diced, and squewered. I leave it off 98 pecent of the time... I use it almost exclusively in Oblivion gates... they're repeatitive and boring in my opinion... so I have by guy run through them at warp speed while I get the Ironic statisfaction that I'm the scarriest thing in demon world.

Sure the oblivion gates are a bit repetitive until the last few, but they are also some of the hardest areas if you go about it like you are supposed to (requiring rest every few mobs).
You could always utilize spells and skills to get you through undetected, instead of cheesing your way through. :)
I do like the battle to get into Cormoran's Paradise though. It even has one of those lame braveheart type speeches, but it's still better than some movie speeches (alexander, lol).

I don't like the oblivion gates at all... they're just filled with the same angery critters over and over and over again. it's boring... they don't talk to you... you don't really get any interesting stuff... there isn't even cool music in there... it's just a bunch of rocks cooking...
So I engage my cloak/turbo mode and it's over in 5 to 10 minutes max.
I'm probably going to try the assaine guild quests now that you say they're good though (that the dark brotherhood... assasine guild...)... my death cloak would be an asset to their organization.
I tried to be a mage... but the quest bugged on me...which is just not acceptable.

when i get really pissed and cant do anything i just open the command line with the | and § button (the one at the start of numerical line) and type tgm... you get god mode lol
and the sigil stones, you just go in inventory, press it add item (sigil stones have one option for armor and such and one for weapons (like on one its 25 fatigue dmg and 8% shield, so i put 8% shield on a ring), then you just write in a new name, its basicly like soul gems
and for the oblivion gates, yeah i go through them like you are supposed to do, nothing hard at lv 6 in a light armor, blade / block / marksman / sneak setup, basicly a real tough warrior with stealth, as the mobs grow with you
so its CRITICAL to keep your combat skills up to date, and not level up on shit like security, because then you will be fucked when your going to combat

As for lock picking, when the thing goes up at the same speed as your lockpick it works, no other speed, im getting quite pro and can open anything with my 13 security skill

and the sigil stones, you just go in inventory, press it add item (sigil stones have one option for armor and such and one for weapons (like on one its 25 fatigue dmg and 8% shield, so i put 8% shield on a ring), then you just write in a new name, its basicly like soul gems
how many sigel stones can you use on a single item in your inventory? Could I use them all on one item? Or what?

karma, the quest isn't bugged, you can do more in it.
Go talk to the high elf outside the mages guild if you want to continue in it, or just go to any other mages guild and talk to the person flagged as unkillable there..
The city it is bugged on is the cirgriel or something like that... It's the one where you have to take that book "fingers of the mountains" off that burned guy.
Anyway, the person 'flagged' by the quest system is the leader of that guild. He's a lizard guy... and I've talked to him completely... all his conversations are grayed out. He already said that he'd rec me. Further, the "rec" conversation line isn't in his dialogue anymore.
I should be done with him. I'll look for a high elf somewhere around there... but I think it's bugged.
and yeah, i just used the invisable spell through most of oblivion unless i was fighting dremora's
Do Dremora's see invisible creatures?
The cloak has two kinds of invisibility on it. It has 1000% camoflague and invisibility... when I put it one I can't seem my character at all. Not even that slight outline that lets you 'sorta' know where invisible characters are...

If you read the quest it tells you to go to each city and seek out the mages guild. So, really all you have to do is go to each mages guild and do a quest for them.
Do you really need to rely on that little green pointer that much? You fail at doing quests. I'd like to see you try and do Morrowind quests. Some of them were literally "Head East until you get to a large rock, then swim North until you get to an island, the cave should be somewhere around there." then the guy just gives you a pat on the back and sends you on your way.

this is really annoying... I've been to all the other places and did their little stupid quests and nothing... damn them.

While Morrowind was very much like that in terms of quests...(I think I took 2 days of wandering to find a guy in the middle of the ashlands) or better yet, Azura's cave. *shudder*
It really felt alot more true to life, and immersed you into the story, as it was very life like. Also, the gratification you got when you completed the quests was quite an achievement...you took the time, and you managed to succeed, without help, without any direction and just a vague hint of what you had to accomplish.

Edit: You can join all guilds, but you have to have a clean record to do the fighers guild and you haveto get locked up in prison to join thieves guild, so you problaby want to join the leagal first, and make sure you dont get a bounty when killing an innocent.

You don't have to get locked up to join the thieves guild, you simply have to get a beggar to talk about the gray fox, ask about joining, and he sends you to Armand Christophe who gives you a test to join.

it's a generally poorly implimented feature... sure, its only useful if you're in the mage guild, but they could have had magic sellers enchant stuff for you too... at a cost...
If I have enough souls and experence/mana then I should be able to make objects of equal or greater power to anything you just happen to pick off of someone.
And as is, you can't... it's weak.
In addition the whole leveling system is kind of messed up especially for mages... enemys seem to gain life faster then your spells become more powerful or magic pool increases...
