Never played R-Type final but i loved the first and 2nd.

Thundersword/clash/force can't actually remember which one is right? it was pretty exclusive to the megadrive and you had the big bad ass thundersword that cut shi-ps down like a hoit knife thru butter.

it was either gradius 2 or 3 on the new, first game i ever bought with my own money

fucking class

but you could count the starfox series as an on rails shooter, the snes one and the n64 one were good when u started aiming for scores on the highest difficulty

Blacksand, the only shooter I know is the FPS.

And the only FPS I like is Q3A.

What about third person shooters? Can we talk about those?

lol I was going to say all the MGSs and Ninja Gaiden, but u beat me there lol.

Ninja Gaiden got uber gay by the last Live! update...It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard....The game got twice as hard each update...So the last was just...Not fun. :( The gameplay was incredible of course...Hopefully they will execute the script writers though! lol

Those of you who didn't play or beat the game, this was the script for ending of the hardest game you have ever played (Not to mention worked your ass off for!)

Main character (Ryu) after you beat the last boss: "It's over"
Babe...dressed like bondage whore, trying to look sweet and sensitive: "Ryu..."

End....Ryu turns into a bird and freaking FLYS AWAY.

(I failed to mention that the story (and voice acting) was fecal material) lol

The shooting game, shoot 'em up, or shmup genre is one of my personal favorites. From playing R-Type, Contra, and Gradius/Lifeforce as a kid to the continuing beauty of Ikaruga today, there's nothing in the world quite like it.

Here are some of my favorites, lemme hear some of yours.

Radiant Silvergun - Treasure's masterpeice. MUCH better than Ikaruga.

Contra series - and I'm referring to the sidescrolling ones, not the crappy 3d ones. Shattered Soldier was the greatest thing Konami has done in years, I spent weeks mastering that game.

The R-Type series - R-Type Final was the most insane shooter ever, there's 101 different ships to unlock and play with and they all fly differently.

The Gradius series - I've been playing this series as long as I've been playing video games, which is well over 20 years at this point. Like good wine, it only gets better with age. The new Gradius 5 was developed by Treasure - the MASTERS of shooting games.

Gunstar Heroes - Possibly the most intense shooting game of all time. Another Treasure game, it pushed the Genesis to limits never before seen. There are literally hundreds of enemies onscreen at once at some points, and with some truly innovative gameplay and quirky humor, the game still stands tall as probably the best side scrolling action game ever.

RayStorm/RayCrisis - Really sick concept and not a bad series either, the lock-on system was a cool concept and seeing a barrage of 50 laser beams erupting from your ship anime style was really nice.

Einhander - Squaresoft. That name should tell you everything you need to know, but in case you didn't .. this is again, one of the best shooters ever made. Beautiful graphics, and it showed true innovation. It actually had a story, for one .. but the arm idea was great. You actually grabbed different weapons from downed enemies and could adjust it to fire different ways, ect. ect.

Metal Slug series - Yet another reason I obsessively love SNK and stalk their office complexes.

Like I said, these are some of my personal favorites .. feel free to post your own.

Up up down down left right left right a, b, a, b, select select start = 30 lives Contra owned.

You are talking scroll-games not shooters which is basically fps or 3dps...

And raptor owned.

Wow Blacksand, it's good to here some names like gunstar heroes dredged up again...r-type final was amazing tho i never managed to get a copy. Einhander was beautiful and stylish in every way, and omg contra series, too classic. I agree shattered soldier was freekin awesome. I love how it's hard.

The only game on your list I didn't get to play to death was Radiant Silvergun. I'd hear so much about it but...wasn't it dreamcast or something?

And yes, raptor pwns.
