You don't have to subscribe to download it when it's released in two days, but you can subscribe for their premium server service, which has really fast downloads and no wait.
Many other sites are likely to have it up too, just not as soon.

Er, does this "open" up to non-subscribed members after 2 days?
And do you need to pay to be a "subscribed member?"

I'm downloading it now, it's available for free on limited speed servers for registered members (basic registration is free).

No, sir. I will wait, thankyou.
Edit: Wait for it to be available through other sites, of course.

The demo will be up on torrent sites before day's end. As per most other demos they propagate quickly just sit back and relax. ISOH or TPB prob has a copy up already.

Why are you always so negative? I'm just trying to keep awareness up, and you come plodding through with your "ohnoes it requires you to register" and "zomgs lawl 5kps".

It was clocking at around 10.0 mbps and would have taken 7 hours according to the little progress thing, so I decided to cancel it and wait for mirror sites to pop up.
Hopefully it's good ... alternatively does anyone have a gamespot account I can use to just download this?
cheers, and

I got screwed on mine. Started the download right after it opened up, left for a while and came home to hopefully get to playing and I see that my server connection was severed at around 100mb in.

To be honest, I kind of like it. I like how the reinforcement is handled, though in skirmish would you get a set amount of cash like and choose your army composition, like in Total War?
My only wish is that it had the Homeworld 2 style space controls. And that there was a "hold ground" command, for both space and ground.

It reminds me of Rebelion, which I realy liked, but better w00t!
It's kind of a dumbed down version of SoaSE, but with ground combat too, while still retaining strategic diversity.

I liked it, played the demo through. Though, at least in the demo, the Falcon is a wee-bit overpowered.
Some official info on the demo:
I should point out a few things, since it seems they are coming up a lot:
1) The Demo is actually from early last month's build, so a lot has been fixed/added/balanced since that time.
2) The build times and galactic fleet movement speeds have been radically sped up for the demo and do not reflect the actual build/travel times in the final game.
3) I thought that camera controls were covered in the tutorial, so it is possible that that particular tutorial didn't get into the demo (I didn't work on the demo or the tutorial, so I can't say for sure).
4) The galactic AI has been almost entirely turned off for the demo - it will be much more agressive in the final game.

SoaSE? Is that Sins of a Solar Empire? If so, how do you know if it's a dumbed down version when there is no demo or anything for Sins?

Seriously, you can solo the entire space level with only the Falcon. And then you get Han and Chewy on land, and they get wtfpwned in a heartbeat.

Yeah, Han & Chewie are space heroes, really. But that doesn't stop you from taking the at-at over with Chewie.

Apparently they are working on a cover story where things were sped up, AI was dumbed down and a bunch of other mumbojumbo about this being an early build. WTF do you make a demo of an early build if the purpose of a demo is to make people buy your game after playing the demo! Sheashe. This earns two thumbs down unless there are vast improvements in retail and they make it not a stupid rps spam fest.

Rebellion? Wow I played that in middle school. I've even played it lately, but it's no fun since it's ridiculously easy even on the hard setting. You just have to wait for the other side to invade a planet, then bombard it causing all the planets in the system to join your side. :o

Its ok. It could be MUCH better. The space shit is basically just a 2d land fight.

SoaSE? Is that Sins of a Solar Empire? If so, how do you know if it's a dumbed down version when there is no demo or anything for Sins?
Because SoaSE is aimed at a relatively hardcore RTS audience while this was meant to be easily accesible to general StarWars fans.
I'll be playing both regardless, but wth.
The space battle would have been more interesting had we had some idea of the meaning of the credits and time spent in building the ships involved I think. I built 3 nebulon B's and 3 corcors, thinking I'd need them, heh, which was a bunch of credits but only took as long to build as an X-wing squadron, while being a good deal more powerfull, and I basicaly wtfpwned the ground units with only artillery and a couple of soldier units, which I'm sure will not be viable in the final game.
This game seems to have more specific combined arms principles than HW has, in that instead of having a few main classes of ships with each a weakness against a type of weapon, each individual unit seems to have strenghs and weaknesses against other specific units, rather than a class.
Also I very much liked the hardpoints on ships, and the implementation of shield ignoring missiles too.
I'm dissapointed in the absence of diplomacy and a more intricate mission system from the game, like rebellion had, which could have made things quite interesting, because as it stands it looks like the start of a game will involve a planet-taking rush, with just a single garison squad for each planet, which in rebellion couldn't hold a planet by force, it'd die quickly to sabotage, and it would have an effect on all the surrounding systems, due to the loss of a planet, you could lose an entire sector to your enemy because you rushed.
Here, spamming units seems to have no penalty.

I agree on most of those counts. Though I think most of that will be fixed by release. My concern is the heros. If a walking carpet can carjack an AT-AT in a split second, and a freakin cargo ship can solo entire emperial fleets we're gonna have a huge problem when the really cool heroes hit the scene.

Release on the sixteent.... just days away w00t!
www.ojcthecurve.nl/images/cookie.gif
Anyways, dunno if the rest of you have looked, but I found that the demo actualy has a VAST amount of final game content inside it, it was just that there was no code to activate it included. there were tons of moddels and gameplay options and ships and troops and hero units not actualy used in the demo, plus the whole campaign could be made playable....
A few modders set about getting at that content, with tiny little mods (300 kB), and 2 particularly good ones have come up for anyone who wants to get a realy great taste of the full game:
Download Bryant and Grey Ghost's mod here:
http://home.houston.rr.com/vallore/other/Bryant%27s%20&%20Grey_Ghost%27s%20Mod%20V2.6G.zip
This is my vafourite of the mods, very stable, the AI that has been added seems fairly intelligent... don't try to attack the pirate bases early on ;)
Follow the instructions included in the text file, choose your side and starting tech level plus galaxy size... you're set.
Download the 'Warlord Total Mod Expansion' here:
http://pff.swrebellion.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1955.0;attach=415
This mod adds a third playable faction (rouge imperial Admiral Zaarin) and has various play modes and AI settings, follow the instruction text that's included.

i think this will be my game to fix the need for a couple of months 'till soase gets released .
try turning circles around at-at with b2 tanks , if you use move attack and micro the b2 the at-at just turns around and round like a big dog catching its tail . it doesnt drop storimtroopers and can t shoot you with its front heavy lazers.
in bryants mod the fighters are to damm tough . i usually build 3 heavy cruisers and a shitload of x wing and y wing . once i killed shield generators and hangar i send my cruisers in to take out ion cannon harpoints and once the destroyers are down the station is eeeeeaaasy.
i doubt this will keep me interested for more then 6months but as a sw fan i think i am gonna buy it .
anybody know if this is pay to play online ?
RazielDemon
Feb 13, 2006, @ 11:40 AM
nope, it's a normal game with online options, 2 to 8 player multiplayer skirmish mode in space or on land, and a 2 player head to head galactic conquest mode.
In bryants I found that occasionaly when you're empire the rebels go incredibly defensive, building a shield generator and turbolaser turrets on every single planet, it makes them impossible to take without AT-AT's.
I found the rebels have a major dissadvantage towards the empire in the fighter department, as you've got to buy your fighters and they take up a population cap slot on the battlefield, while the empire's fighters spawn from inside the capital ships, 2 fighters and a bomber per star destroyer, and the acclimators have 1 fighter and a bomber. These respawn a few times if they're killed, the number of respawns dependant on the ship...
On the other hand, to make up for this the rebels get 25 pop cap in space, while empire just has 20.
Still, I've yet to be attacked by any fighter force that a pair of tartan corvettes don't take care of very very quickly.

heh, this doesn't entirely fit in with EAW, but I didn't feel like making a separate thread for it....

Rebels have it so incredibly hard against the empire. I can build nothing but 2 Tartan Cruisers and then spam endless Star Destroyers or Victory Cruisers and win. Lots of big firepower + lots of free fighters/bombers.
Though I do think if the rebel AI was a bit smarter, they would somehow eliminate the Tartans before sending ALL of their fighters towards me at the beginning.
I wish heroes stayed permanently dead, too.
I killed Han and Chewy both on the ground several times, killed the Falcon twice in space (but both times he managed to singlehandedly take out a Victory Cruiser or two before dying, so lame).
RazielDemon
Feb 15, 2006, @ 12:17 AM
Yeah, I mistakenly labled bryants as my favourite, actualy it's the warlord mod.
Warlord has had a lot of reballancing done to it, in that hero units arn't rediculously powerfull, capital ships can hit corvettes (rather than having corcors and tartans being able to easily take out star destroyers/moncals).
The costs and values of various of the ships have been altered, Zaarin and Piett both get a specialy modified ISD, Home One (Ackbar's ship) has gotten a buff and spawns x and y wings.
Another alteration is that planets can't support more than 6 buildings, which is all that the tatooine map can handle anyway, and it's possible to make multiple versions of the same building... usefull for farm planets of mines, and for heavily fortified garrisons if you've got a few AT-AT factories.
Also, hyperspace travel times have been substantialy increased, so distances mean something, rather than the near instatravel of the demo/bryants.
Quietus
Feb 15, 2006, @ 05:29 AM
Well my hero units never seemed ridiculously powerful.
Sure, the Slave One tears up fighters, but the Millenium Falcon can solo most fleets.
RazielDemon
Feb 15, 2006, @ 03:03 PM
Yeah, that's because you were only supposed to be using the rebels in space to fight, and petroglyph wanted to make sure it was almost impossible to lose that space battle...
In the final game there's gonna be totaly different ballancing, apparently a lot like that in Warlord, but possibly with even slower construction and warp times.
Apocalypse
Feb 15, 2006, @ 03:35 PM
The Demo is of an earlier build and as such shouldn't be treated as faithful to the full release. Build times will vary from unit to unit, ISD's taking the longest to build. From what I've heard of the mutliplayer skirmish modes, it looks like it will be a little similar to ground control 2.
The individual unit stats will be different than what you've seen in the demo as well.
Who here will actually be buying it?
