SLI went away with the intro of AGP graphics cards. well guess what! Alienware requested custom designed boards from nvidia that's bringing it back.
SLI allows motherboards to utilize DUAL graphics cards. Alienware had nvidia custom build a board for their newest 6.5 grand PC. Best bet though is to save your money. the Alienware is an early design of the motherboard and currently uses a Xeon processor, which while it has high clock speeds, it has slow memory speeds so doesn't seem near as fast.
Nvidia is already hard at work at the next generation of Nforce4's that'll utilize the SLI technology, and will use every gamers favorite, AMD's! ATI is rumored to have started work on their own, but no official announcement yet.
So what does this mean? well first of all you need dual identical cards, so yeah it will be expensive. the good news is that you'll get a boost of about 40-50% over a single GC. The speedup generally only occurs during higher resolutions and game settings, but well.... that wouldn't be much of a problem if you're running top of the line stuff like this now would it?
So say yay! for new technology to improve our gaming powers! for more info check out the current issue of PCgamer, or i believe CPU has an article too.
