Ok, so, we have 3 consels, XBox360, PS3, and the Rev. The XBox360 and PS3 and basicly the same. So it doesnt really matter which one you buy, and you wont buy both, considering that the fucking DVD Remote for XBox360 is 130$ and the coards are 40$, and who knows what PS3 is gonna charge you for, its too much money for both. But here comes the Revolution. Its cheaper, small, and its got a remote for a controller, with all these joystick and cool attachment. you can also download old nintendo games onto it. and a whole lot of nifty stuff.
What im trying to say, is that, people are probably gonna either the xbox360 or PS3 in their household, mainly for the teenagers, or maybe the dad. But for the Grandparents, mom, or little ones, you got the rev. You can do so many damn things with that remote, its got a motion detecter, so you can use it for a number of things. The editors for EGM, got to play metroid priem 2 using this, and they said it worked perfect. using the remote for moving, shooting, ect, and the joystick attachment for looking around. Maybe a fishing game for grandpa? The possibilities are endless. Another cool thing is that the remote, which has two buttons on one side, and the D-pad on another, works perfectly as a NES controller when flipped around, which is like heavon on earth considering you have the NES catalog to download from.
Well, Nintendo has always had the best 1st party games, mario, link, metroid, ect. but how bout that 3rd party support? I've seen alot of quotes from alot of game companies saying that this is a very good move from nintendo, and its share of bad critisms. I think that nintendo's success wil be alot on its games, and support. But i think thats already looking good for them.

I think Nintendo is, yes.
Microsoft and Sony have that area of the console market cornered, Nintendo will not get anywhere by trying to compete with both of them directly. By going with the gaming innovation, and with their usually sweet selection of games they have their own area of the market where MS and Sony cannot compete.
They should continue it, even stronger after the revolution.

I just read a really good story about this. A man was recently hurt in a surfing accident and is now quadripiliegic *can't spell* and he can't hold or use a normal controller anymore because of his limited finger movement. The revolutions controller allows him to still play games. He can move his arm around and make little wrist moves and because it doesn't rely totally on buttons and such he is ok. This new design is giving people the chance to play games that never would have been able to before. I give Nintendo a lot of credit for trying something new and I support them. I think the new design will really help open up the market.
Another story: My dad would play some video games but he always says the controller is too complicated and what not. Well with the Revolutions remote he wouldn't have a problem because it is very simple to use.

Two things -
Number 1 - WOW, an intelligent post from Demon!
Number 2 - The downloadable NES catalog sounds sweet, but how many people here already have an extensive NES collection on their computers?
I'm not saying the revolution is a bad console, but everything it does - or rather to say, everything that it does that I'm interested in, my PC already does.

if the rev can dl N64 and GC games, it'd be a winner. I know people that would buy a Rev just for those two (and SNES Mario) things alone.
i wanna know how that remote is gonna work.. because on the original duck hunt, if you shot a piece of white paper with the gun, it would always register as a hit...

when i grew up nintendo was the only real option next to a sega .
nintendo should concentrate on publishing games for ps3 and xbox360 , there is no room for the rev imho .gameboy adv. , the psp , xbox360 and ps3 have a dominant part of the market .
i dont care who has the best machine , it s the platform that is bought the most that will win . ( if you doubt me google betamax )
personally i gambled on the xbox last time ( i love to play RTS on the PC , FPS on a console ) because i thought the micro$oft approach would blow ps2 away .
i know my computer outperforms any console but i love to play consolegames with my mates on game evenings . nothing better then to get the mss out of the room invite some friends get some belgian beer , dutch herbs and laugh while your mate tries to outrun the cops ( kinda RL ts evenings )
i am planning to buy the PS3 simply because most of my friends will buy it , i will get more contacts to mod it and exchange games faster . furthermore xbox pissed me off with the xbox live and i dont wonna give bill another one of my hard earned euro's

the xbox360 is crashing... apparently it's the power supply unit... it's over heating and causing the unit to crash... if you lift the unit off the ground or even open the case and blow air on it from a fan, it stops crashing... or so they say.
we'll see how the ps3 does...

I've looked at the specs for the PS3 and the XBOX360. They just boast faster linear processors, larger memory busses for their 3d rendering and faster graphics card clocks. Basically, they plan to improve on graphics but not much else.
I suppose that's fine for consoles, however, that's the reason why I'm never getting a console. PC gaming has always been on the cutting edge of technology, exactly where I like it.
But this is where the Nintendo Revolution plays in. It seems to be straddling the half-way point. The extremely wide support for a variety of interfaces is a plus. The innovations made with its controllers are something that the PS3 and the XBOX360 can't match. To top it off, the Revolution is supposed to support wi-fi connections to the 'net and be able to download and run software. It seems like, in some regards, it's a dumbed down PC with a really nice control interface.
However, the Revolution can't claim all the glory. The PS3 and the XXBOX360 will also be integrating some of these features. Since I live near a Revolution nutcase, however, I've heard a great deal about the improvements in Revolution's control system and have noted that these do not appear in its competition.
In short, the Revolution is going in a unique direction, like the other consoles, further increasing the variety of products I won't waste my money on :P

I'm too rich to get into consoles... I just bought on of these for 150 USD (got a great deal on it)
http://www.soundblaster.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=208&product=14000
I'm always looking for stuff to add to the box and it always makes a huge difference in my use of the machine... I've wired most of the stuff in my place to different machines and it's frankly something the consols can't match.
I can also still play games from the old DOS days (although, because of stupid XP I have to use emulation now)... to say nothing of play sega, NES, SNES, PS, N64 games... I beat mario 64 on my old PC... played it like once before that...
If nintendo wants to make some money, they might want to think about making a PC emulator and releasing a bunch of their older games on discs. That won't compete with the revolution and I would be inclined to buy some of them. But I'm not buying a consol... too much clutter and inferior hardware when I have a have SEVERAL machines that are much better.

Thats a nice sound card there....
But yeah, my friend was telling me about the overheating, reason hes not getting one. I wonder if they decide to recall them, they only shipped 50,000 to US anyways

I've have all the Nintendo consoles, and I plan to get this one, eventually. First I'm getting my 360, come Hell or high water, I'm getting a 360 for my birthday.

In one of the game mags they compared the Xbox360's power supply to a chuihuahua. The power supply is almost as large as the average chuihuahua. My friend got one on launch day and he called me and told me to get my lazy ass over there. We then fragged each other silly on Call of Duty 2. Oh and while I was there I laughted my ass off over that thing. Seriously it's HUGE!!
My buddy has his on it's side with a fan on it cause he's all paranoid about it "melting" or something. After reading some articles about it he has a pretty good reason to be :)

The rev will only feature N64, NES and SNES games as downloadble content. GC games will be playable in the same format as the new revolution games. That being said depending on how they do this excess content which quite frankly if it works will have extreme facelift potentional for nintendo to charge a small fee for updated graphics of these older games and acquire a new income stream. One thing that sets appart the rev as far as I have heard is that their wifi is free when compared to XBL you simply plug a small usb type device into your computer and then are connected at least thats how the DS is showing it done.
Both the N64 and GC sold more units then the XBOX and PS2 the biggest difference is that the XBOX and PS2 had more games purchased for them. Nintendo still is a very economically viable company by keeping production costs way down and making a better share of profit per unit then the other two companies. But in volume of games sold I think thats where the picture of both sony and microsoft outperforming nintendo comes from.

i cant believe that the onyl way to watch DVD's on the 360 is to pay for a 130$ remote, and to play in HD, you have to buy a 40$ coard

Yes. Markets like these historically don't support even 2 sources, let alone three. Nintendo needs to head in a different direction, and sony and m$ can run off into the graphical land of trying to be more leet/sleek. Hence I can still respect and (probably will) support them. 3 near-identical consoles just doens't work.

if nintendo had better and more varied games, they would own the market. im sure of it.
actually, i read a blog of a guy who led production on a certain game, ported from PC. he said the coding for the GC was significantly more useful and versitile than PS2, which was so discombobulated it took them twice as long to code
they probably just burned the CD-ROM to a XBox disc to port it... lol

More varied games?
FPS - Metriod Prime
Platformer - Mario
RPG - The Legend of Zelda (My favorite games of all time)
Sports - Well, most of them are nintendo mascot spin-offs, but they did have one real basketball game that was alright.
Strategy - PikMin
Party game - mario Party
Uh, fighter? - Super smash bro.
And thats really all you need. If they come out every year with a sequal to each, and with online support for each, it could be great. And you guys do know you can use a new regular controller?

I think more varied could be taken a little more seriously there. I mean, seriously. nintendo already tried the "10 awesome games then fall flat on face" for two generations. First party can't drive a console to success by any means.
Run a comparable check on the PS2 library and I think "varied" will come into perspective.
AA+ titles only (what's pikmin btw :/)
FPS - Medal of Honor series, Timesplitters, Socom
Platformer - Ape Escape 2, Jak series, Ratchet and Clank
RPG - Final Fantasy games, any squeenix games, suikoden series
Sports - Every year, sega and ea go at it...
Strategy - does this genre even count on consoles?
Party game - DDR series (karaoke, guitars, w/e), Eyetoy series etc.
Racing - GT series, NFS series
I contend that " that's all you really need" represents a very small percentile of the market, hence that is the area of the market nintendo now occupies.
Given this has been nintendo's strategy for some time and it has returned diminishing results, I think the approach at "we are a gaming console made for pure fun" is a breath of fresh air, and hopefully it will break new ground. M$ and Sony duking it out at the "we are the baddest and coolest media center/entertainment-sleek-thingamajigger" can only go so far really.

Gamecube:
Pikmin is an AA+ title, it was a huge success on the Gamecube and was actually a really fun and novel one to play, thiunk of a cross between Lemmings, Cannon Fodder and Darwinia and you're close, huge amounts of fun :)
The problem with the Gamecube is that nobody has ever heard of the games, because not many people own the console, as far as software goes, Nintendo have always been a very innovative company, but with the current lack of support for their consoles, nobody ever plays them aside from the avid 'cube fans.
Anyways - there are a *huge* array of really very good games on the gamecube which were never bought just because the console never really took off all that well:
FPS: Metroid Prime, Call of Duty Series, Medal of Honour: Dogs of War, Goldeneye 2
Platformer: Donkey Kong Jungle beat (with support for Bongo's plugin), Sonic (all varieties), Viewtiful Joe (a properly hard platformer, much fun :D)
Adventure: Resident Evil 4 (possibly the best game on the cube, a real return to form for a series that had started to bore me a little)
RPG: Zelda series, Final Fantasy Crystal chronicles, Phantasy Star Online series
Sports: all the sports games released by EA/Sega are also on the 'cube
Strategy/puzzle: A lot of the party games could come under this category, as such - the Gamecube is the *only* console so far to have any success with strategy games ;)
Beat 'em Up: All the major series: Soul Calibur II, Capcom vs SNK
Party Accessories: Bongos, Dance Mats, Link-up to upto 4 gameboys simultaneously (4 player Zelda 4 swords is suprisingly good fun)
Racing: Mario Cart, FZero FX, Burnout Series, Need for Speed Series
Fell, if you take a serious look at the consoles, most of the AA+ titles are released on all formats, several of the games you have mentioned are also available on the Gamecube as well as PS2/Xbox.
The only thing that held the Gamecube back was a lack of sales of the actual console, most of the EA/Sega titles are now launched across the board, and the GC has a suprising number of unique titles which innovate beyond the "oh look, it's another crappy clone of <insert game name here>"

What?? I thought due to uber low price GC actually has a ton of units sold.
And it's true many titles are cross platform now, but such wasn't always the case. Sony is like the M$ of pc's, they're very friendly to other developers, whereas historically nintendo hides programming knacks and whatnot and saves them for their first party games, the apple of our day in a away.
I'm interested in the average age of a GC owner. I don't picture NFL 2K6 selling well on a GC
Critta
Dec 1, 2005, @ 01:53 PM
Naaa, GC has sold a fair few units, but in comparison to m$ or Sony, they've sold sod all. (This was last time I checked - I doubt it's changed considerably)
Why do you not picture NFL selling well on a Gamecube? I assume what you are suggesting is that the GC owners are likely younger than the owners of other consoles?
I dunno - but I was a hell of a lot more into sports when I was a kid than I am now, so I would argue that the younger age group would probably be more likely to buy sports games than the older, but then that's just me :D

Yeah, a couple years back, I would buy madden every year, but for some reason im just not interested in it anymore. Although I do watch football everyweek.
RE4 did save the cube, alot of people bought it just because of that game. Interesting that all of the better recent RE games are on the cube (RE 1 Remake anyone?), maybe they cut a deal?
