After playing FFXI for a very long time I can only recommend against getting it.
There are some newer MMO coming out that would be far superior choices. Even some older ones would be good as well.
Biggest issue with it is the forced party system, which may result in you having to dedicate 6-12 hours of time just to have an efficient party (at moderate to high levels). On top of that the level grind is pretty bad.

seriously FFXI had some good parts about it, but it will rape your free time. in order to really get much of an experience out of it you need 6-10 hours at a time. it is...... an MMORPG for hardcore players. even i got bored of it now. Seriouly, i had a static party, a DAMN good one infact, and now after over a year of averaging prolly 7 hours a night they have just reached level 70. I suggest WoW or guildwars since thsoe seem the two most popular among TLSC, and neither is near as time consuming. Although i do think you can level TOO fast in WoW.

wow. FFXI is like the stealer of souls, and the destroyer of friendships. for the past hour and a half my boyfriend and my friend have been arguing over our static party in FFXI. my other friend and i are part of the convo but we're on another chat box going "wow. these two need to chill it's just a game" the argument is over time spent in FFXI.
moral: if you wanna play FFXI, have a TON of time to devote to it.
