no it wasn't.
It was just a joke these guys had and then they made that swf video (all the photo's in it are photoshop products btw).
And now it's become some sort of cultural icon.. completely unintentional

The actual qoutes and some of the music was indeed from a game.
Zero Wing. For Genesis.
Utterly uninspired game, standard side scrolling shooter. The only thing that really made it stand out was the spectacularly bad translation, which inspired the song some years later. Game came out in '90 or '91.

One of the areas of gaming I know an obscene amount about.
Shoot 'em ups, both side scrolling and vertical are probably by far my favorite genre of games.
