A Little About Me.
My name is Charles Douglas. I was born in the sleepy little town called Selma, Al. in 1948, March 2nd to be exact ( that's also Texas independence day for you yanks). My parents moved to Ft Worth Texas when I was 6 mo. old and I've essentially been here ever since.
I attended high school here in Ft. Worth. I quit after the 11th grade and joined the Navy so I could see the world through a porthole.
My first assignment was as a machinist mate aboard a destroyer (tin can for you land lubbers). It was the USS Robert H. McCord DD822. She was named after a marine who won the Congressional Medal of Honor winner in WWII.
We, the USS McCord, arrived in Vietnam in the summer of 1967 as a plane guard ship. We followed aircraft carriers around the Tonkin Gulf providing security and picking up downed pilots who had to ditch.
Not long after arriving in the area , the call went out when the USS Forestall blew up and caught fire. It was a scene that will be etched in my mind forever. Spraying water on the carrier was like trying to piss on a forest fire. All the while we were dodging burning jet fuel and shrapnel every time a 500 pounder went off.
After that we were assigned to the I Corps gun line. We provided arty support to the marines during their assault on the Citadel in Hue City Feb 1968.
Later we went back to the Tonkin gulf and were involved in operation "Market Time". This op was a little difficult to explain.
Later on we were assigned to support duty for the PBR street gang and swifts. We steamed home in the summer/fall of 1968.
Upon reassignment I tried to get them to send me back to Nam, but they assigned me to an aircraft carrier, the USS Saratoga CVA-60. I was discharged from her in Dec 70.
I started driving a truck right out of the service and have been at it ever since.
I was married in 1970 and divorced in 1983. I have four beautiful kids and two grandchildren. I don't get to see them much since I'm gone a lot. I've never remarried.
I joined the Texas army national guard in 1976. I retired from them in 1987 as 1st Sgt. of an airborne line co. AIRBORNE you say? A jump qualified squid, go figure.
I'm an avid ham radio operator and take delight in being able to send/receive Morse code all over the world.
I would like to invite you all to my web site,i havr an old one and one being constructed. both are up.http://www.navysnype.com or www.geocities.com/cdoug68/index.html
