preview

In the town of Skuon, on the road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, you can pile your plate high with crispy critters and wash the whole thing down with a slug of spider wine (made from fermented rice, spider added later).

Once captured, the ortolan would traditionally be left in a dark box, where the lack of light would prompt it to gorge itself. When plumped up to three or four times its normal size, the bird would be drowned in a snifter of armagnac, then quickly roasted for six or eight minutes and served hot.

Some sound remotely interesting (the shark meat one), some are good (sea cucumber; first hand experience, you should try it as it's real good), while others (spider, bird, snake heart) are absolutely revolting.

muslces

DURRRRRRRRRRRR ....

Do you mean "mussels," as in the bivalve, or "muscles," as in meat.

IF YOU THINK MEAT IS EXOTIC YOU'RE VERY MESSED UP.

cheers, and

Its seafood depending on where you are located that can be rare. What listed above isnt exactly pukeworthy but not necessarly my cup of tea. Roasted grasshopper doesent taste half bad, psy you should know this from the RoM summer offerings every so often when they do their insect tastings. They arnt any worse then suggesting eating cow brains or some such.

Ive taisted some crazy shit in my time (snake) but the I couldnt get over the spiders intro and monkey brains finale.

I never had a taste for sushi until I gave a Jap restaurant in TO a try (upscale) and ever since my tastebuds approve. But stuff like those damn honey ants and insects/arachnids in general turn my stomach on sight let alone plate; alongside dogs meat cat meat and rodents (exception being bunnies - and yes i know they are Leporidae but they seem so much like hopping ratz with big ears)

I'd say the wierdest thing I've eaten was squirrel. It's pretty good, but a bitch to clean. -_-

Rabbit meat is actually very very good.

I would assume squirrel meat is, too ... just keep in mind that you're eating closely related species to rats and mice

:X

I could handle most of that, except for the brains (cannot stand the texture, or really the thought of eating it), the petrified shark (would be easier if it wasn't left to rot), and the spider. I really can not handle insects, even seeing one around the house gives me a little shiver. I guess if it just the abdomen and somehow deskinned I could.

What about de-haired?

You know tarantulas are a very prickly species.

Yea, but I kind of assumed the hair would go with the exterior.

Have you seen that episode of Fear Factor where the lady is eating some crazy african spider with the odd front legs, and it ends up biting her. I get that image in my head and it just completely turns me off of insects.
