View Full Version : Alexander... Suck McSuck + Sucky Suckness = Bad Movie

Someone asked for my opinion and I'll give it. ;)
This movie is a total piece of shit. lol
Not because of the bisexuality... well... yes... okay, it is. But not -because- of the bisexuality.
It sucks because of all the amazingly great things Alexander accomplished in his life... of all the things his legend adds up to on an epic scale... Oliver Stone makes a movie that =FOCUSES= on the fact that he was bisexual... not all the great things that he accomplished.
Alexander is without a doubt my favorite historical figure... I wanted to see more of him being historical and heroic, and being the fabled greatest military leader that ever lived. Instead... Oliver Stone writes a script that lasts 3 houes and containts at least 3 teary eyed scenes of nothing but professions of love and insecurity to his male lover.
Totally boring film making there. The editing is piss poor, the music is overdramatic and annoying... Any Given Sunday was an amazing movie, and then he fucks up the greatest legend ever... Maybe rivaled only by King Arthur. :|
Anyway... I have a feeling that Oliver Stone may have had some under the table deals with some gay rights groups... or he wanted to make a gay movie to be controversial or something, because it really doesn't seem to be much about his legend.... those are just kind of asides like "GAYGAYGAYGAYGAY ... yea, battle... GAYGAYGAYGAYGAY... hmmm... let's make alexander cry like a baby girl a few more times... GAYGAYGAYGAYGAY... *sigh* i guess we need some violence... but make sure that Alexander cries some more... GAYGAYGA" etc....
Not to mention that, as far as my knowledge goes anyway, the fact that Hephistian(sp?) was more than just a good, good friend has never been substantiated... I think it's quite possible, but very much overblown and exploited by gay rights people.
Point - you'll be more entertained to sit at home and watch a soap opera and pretend the pretty blonde with small boobs is a dude.

I agree. I walked out. Focus wasent on war, but on sexuality. When i see a movie, its for WAR! And people have written books saying longdead presidents were gay. Who fking cares! What they did (ie conqure the fukcing known world) not who they did!

Actually Alexander reacted with great anger when someone gifted him with a boy slave of renowned beauty. He sent a letter asking if "He had ever given anyone reason to think he was engaged in such filthy activities".
Haephestion was one of his two best friends, the other one being Crateros. The theory that he might have been Alexander's lover is mostly based on Alexander's passion for Homer and the figure of Achilles.
Oliver Stone compensates the mistake in Troy (Achilles and Patroklos were lovers, not cousins) with another mistake.
And by the way, ruining a movie on Alexander the Great is homicide. Off with the head of Oliver Stone!

Yeah, I was reading about Oliver Stone...He seems really really messed up in the head.
Also, all these people like Greeks, and historians are saying that Alexander was not actually Bi-Sexual....
MVB

Also, Alexander was great for his military achievements, as well as his strong-willed, stern exterior -- which showed no weak emotions and which allowed him to lead an entire army over the entirety of the known world, while keeping them in relatively good spirits.
He was NOT Alexander the Great in any way due to his "possible" bisexuality. He was Alexander the Great for his military achievements.
Honestly, after reading a detailed plot summary, I refuse to go watch it; this has nothing to do with my stance on gays, but my stance on recreation of historical events and figures, and I'm disgusted by a farcical attempt to falsify history to one's own designs.

I must say, I don't see why people are getting so pissed about the Bi-Sexuality. Why?
Because it's the same as being gay. Both are equally offensive, and utterly vile.

A massive portion of the ancient greek male world was bisexual; that's simple fact. The problem is, this was of miniscule importance to their lives, and was almost always done behind closed doors. Greeks believed in presenting an image of themselves as free of the emtional appearances of women, and so would not express things like love or flirtation in public ANYWAY. By focusing on this about a Greek hero, you are focusing on something which in no way influenced his story, and his heroics.
It is the equivalent of making a movie about Jesus that focused on the women who wanted to have sex with him. Jesus's sexuality had about as much impact on his story and life as they had on the stories and lives of ancient Greek heroes. Motivation for great accomplishment almost never revolved around sexuality.

In your opinion.
I would suggest though that such a debate be taken to Political and Social forums and not continued in a thread about this movie.

Don't you think a relationship with a big hairy man is discusting? Seriously.
The media, makes if sound like people in america accept Homosexuality. But homosexuality, like almost everything else that has to do with morailty, is warped by the media.
Talk to anyone who isn't gay you can be quite sure that they would be against gays.
On a minor note: Calling someone gay is a relativly new popular affront. most teenagers say it, and you can be sure that a person who supports gays would never attempt insult someone by calling them gay. Admittedly this is last paragraph was a weak arguement, and was intended as a half hearted side note... No need to refute it, unless absoloutly neccesary :)

I have to give credit to oliver stone. It takes effort to take the "Greatest" guy in history, who has thousands of battles, hundreds of amazing feats, tons of history, lots of intrigue and entertainment, and make a movie about him that bad. Not only that, to make a horrible movie that has nothing to do with anything, is boring, stupid, and not entertaining at all. I mean, Oliver Stone REALLY screws up when he screws up, eh? *applauds Oliver Stone* Takes skill to do that.

You can't reproduce historical events in any way, shape, or form in a teatrical release without some distortion of the fact.
People will go into this movie thinking they're in for a thriller, and so many people believe that things that actually happen in these types of movies are real-life, going to be true, real historically. What they don't get is that Hollywood has to distort the facts to give the picture the right "feel."
To all of you expecting something awesome out of Alexander, jump off a cliff, now.

Justice... I didn't expect much. I expected an ENTERTAINING movie about a historical figure. I expected to see a lot of distortion and misrepresentation.... That's fine... but Alexander's life is so incredibly awesome (go study it. He took an island fortress by building a land bridge to invade it...They don't even mention or show it!) that if you just use his original life, without theatrics, the movie would STILL own. For some fucked up reason this movie ignores everything and just makes up the fact he's Bi-Sexual and decides to do the whole movie based on that.
Here's the movie "Old guy talks slowly about nothing... father's an asshole... mother is a coniving bitch... alexander is gay... father is more of an asshole... mother conives some more... alexander is gay... alexander is gay... alexander is gay... alexander is gay... alexander fights a short historically inaccurate boring battle... alexander is gay... alexander is gay... alexander is gay... alexander is NOT gay... alexander is gay... alexander is gay... alexander fights a longer, even more historically inaccurate, but a lot more satisfying battle (best scene in the movie)... alexander is gay... alexander's gay lover dies... alexander's dies... old man rambles on some more... end."

Justice, Alexander the Great's story AS IS had the perfect feel. Not all Hollywood historical movies are warped. This movie was given the wrong feel.
Oliver Stone should be shot. Colin Farrell needs to reevaluate his sexuality, as he has played a bisexual dude in 2 movies just this year. Maybe he's expressing himself in film. But if he is bi, he needs to just come out and say it, b/c he's rapidly earning the stigma of "that actor who will fuck a dude on screen for yoU."

I was reading inlike People magazine (Don't ask it was my mom's magazine and I was bored, on the plane) and when Colin came and read some of the script infront of Stone, (stone was ovbiously seeing if Colin had what it took to be the character) this is what he said about the interview.
I thought this was pretty funny...And I can relate to the last part
"70 percent of what he (Colin) said, was in Gaelic, and he kept grabbing my knee, I hate that." but he said that the way Colin read the sample scipt parts (on a acting scale) was "Amazing".

We were saying that if you left it completely historically accurate (usually the boring version of a movie) this movie would still be good... instead by changing it for the better, or whatever, the movie is worse.
At least that's what I think I was saying...

*sigh*...I haven't seen this movie. and ever since the trailer...No, ever since King arthur, or whatever it's called, trailer showed, I knew I wasn't going to see Alexander. I'm quite amused that my film buff/film student friend was really looking forward to this film. I explained repeatedly that this movie, was going to suck giant cock, just like Arthur did, (I didnt' have to see that one either to know). What I DIDN'T know is that the ..er...sucking was literal. Glad I saved my money, thanks kids :)

There's going to be another movie on Alexander the Great in a few months, if I'm not mistaken, based on the Novel by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. I remember reading that somewhere, but don't remember where atm. Can anyone confirm?
