Gaming Server?

Anyone know what it would take to create a server for gaming? I know how to build the computer, but what operating system, software and connection speeds do you need? :confused:

I was thinking mainly about HW2, but I don't know if the characteristics that we don't like in multiplayer will carry over because of the multyplayer code. I would love it if we could bypass the Gamespy servers all together. I am sure others have either done this or tried, but I have never seen mention of it anywhere. And would like to know if its possible or just forget it. I would be open to the possibility of creating a server for other games though, like DOW. :\

Thanks for replying to my post, but found out that it is impossible with HW2 because of the peer to peer code.

Would be interested in setting up another game though, any suggestions?
