View Full Version : Spam Control

Several of the new Shadow Clan members apparently left last night due to the senseless spam in the chat, and asking it to stop to the tune of no response.
It is HIGHLY likely I will be creating a new chat channel along the lines of HotCchat for members to spam around in, to address this issue.
I'm not content that the 3 members who left did not contact me and give me an opportunity to resolve the issue first, but that won't keep me from resolving the issue in hindsight.
Please pass on a 0-tolerance spam issue to in-game buddies. Basically, although you can just pull your windows apart, not everyone likes to do this b/c there might be "good" info in /guild chat.
I have a VERY good idea who the people are that filled up these members' chat windows with truly mindless gibberish. Please mind yourselves; this is a game, that people like the play. Socializing is GREAT, but it is not a chat program. If you need to mutter nonstop often-hitting-enter drivel, please get mIRC and do it there away from people trying to focus on the game AND socialization.

I have created a new chat channel called Hotcspam.
New rules will be posted tonight moderating mindless drivel into THAT channel, and people who do not wish to hear it/be part of it need simply not join the spamchannel.
Additionally, a separate chatbox can be created and hidden at will for different aspects of chat, whether that be guild chat, IF trade chat, whatever.
I have contacted the 2 people who rudely treated those who requested the spam be stopped, and hope they will improve their behavior int he future.
Re: those who left, hopefully we can have a chat and resolve the issue, rather than developing any genuine "drama" out of this.
I ask all other SC who merged to have some patience and allow me to get on top of things (in the metaphorical sense) and see if we can't work this out to everone's mutual satisfaction.

As a clarifier, I will NOT BE REGULATING PEOPLES' ability to chat.
What I will be doing is -- when a conversation gets so fast-paced that it fills up peoples' chat windows, I'll ask people to bring that conversation to the HOTCSPAM channel, so that those who haven't joined hotcspam or don't want to listen to it don't HAVE to listen to it, but I also don't have to tell people they're not allowed to have a conversation.

yes, i found the 'i am a pirate' and fart convo's last night to be most annoying. especially after my stint away and seeing nothing like that before - major changes. (i have to say the number of hotc on last night was rather impressive, though. ) hope the spam can be diverted successfully

My point exactly. I'm fortunate that most people don't just go "omg annoying /gquit"

What also REALLY pisses me off, is the following, which I get a lot ....
"Sorry, MVB, it's a really awesome guild when you're on, but the second you log off ..."

farting pirates sound pretty cool. what the problem is is not stopping after 2 min.
that's why I mute the fuck out of people after 2. why did that not happen?

I also noticed the huge amount of spamming late last night, but it didn't bother me as much as I was in Dire Maul (but still pretty annoying). I will try to talk to the guys who left regarding this. I suggest in the future, the on duty officer should just step in and get the situation under control.

Everyone is a little miffed at why they weren't muted. Rest assured there will be no further repeat performances of this crap, if we can help it. If there are, day-long mutings, etc. will probably result.
It is not right for the gaming experience to be harmed by chat in a game. If this were a chat program, and people complained about chat, that'd be one thing, but it's a game. When people being assinine cause the game to be less a game, there's a problem, and it WILL be resolved.

To be honest, I've experienced this personally, which is a real shame. It's great to see so many people on at a time, but I have noticed ( or been made aware of ) cases of general "lawlessness" when the brunt of the officers are not around. Please respect each other, do your best to be helpfull, and above all else, show some integrity.
We all have our moments, which I understand, but let's do our best to present a united front, and take care of our own, first and foremost....

thank you 4 addressing the issue. i listened to several shadow clan memebers when they left. One concern was they were upset after non- stop spamming that caused a priest to be inifective in an instance. This led to several of them leaving. i tried to listen to them vent but could not mute any memeber. thanks 4 creating an alt hotc spam channel. those that were spaming were just having fun which what this game is about too. :) :nyah:
