All about HOMEWORLD 3

---------taken-from-relic-forums-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Im sure the title of this thread will cause a few heart flutters, but unfortunately hell is still as hot as ever and Homeworld 3 is still not looking likely to happen in the near future.

The reason for this thread is due to the large number of homeworld fans that are indeed truly dedicated to homeworld and following the wave.

The facts are as follows:
Sierra/Vivendi Universal (VU Games) own the rights to the Homeworld Universe as a part of the original publishing deal for Homeworld.
Relic Entertainment is the developer of Homeworld and Homeworld 2.
Barking Dog is the developer of Homeworld:Cataclysm.
Neither Relic Entertainment or Barking Dog (who were bought out by Rockstar Games Canada) are able to make another Homeworld game unless hired to do so by Sierra/VU.
After the release of Homeworld 2, Relic Entertainment were purchased by publisher THQ, and now exclusively make games for them.
The CEO of Relic Entertainment and originator of Homeworld, Alex Garden, has left Relic and THQ to pursue other projects.
As THQ do not own the rights to the Homeworld Universe, it is extremely unlikely (read: not going to happen) that Relic will make another Homeworld game (if they even wanted to).
It is also extremely unlikely that Sierra/VU Games will hire another publisher to make another Homeworld game.
In a nutshell, it is extremely unlikely that we will ever see a Homeworld 3.

I'm not going to say it will never happen, as they do have a habit of reviving movies & games years later (see Battlestar Galactica for instance), but I highly doubt that it is going to happen in the near future, but perhaps maybe in a decade we will see a shadow in the distance slowly emerging as Homeworld3.

i would like to hear your opinions on this matter so post a reply anytime you like.

Starcraft 2 will be around 2010 maybe. Its 12 years after Starcraft 1. The same will be with Homeworld3. The reason is different. Blizzard make games just extremly slow. By the 2010 there will be Geforce 12 and Radeon 100000 and monitors would be larger then walls in houses. If they dont make Homeworld3 or similar space RTS till 2010-12 they'll just waste posible money. There is a strong need for the game. Imagine when there are no planes while milions of ppl want to travel by air. It is nonsence.

yeh but with planes for example concorde.... they took it off the air and built something totally massive like the new jet thats 3 times the size of a 747 that they built the wings for up near my end of the country. i really would like to see a new homeworld soon even if they dont call it homeworld3 but i still would like it to include s'jet so we an finally get along with the story line already. i agree with the fact that there is a lot of money to be made with homeworld but the problem is the entire fuckup with the rights to the game and a whole lot of companies undecided as to whether or not they could be sued. dammit i hate corporations.

Ffs leave the HW franchise.. there will not be HW3 in the near future... Get over it. I already got over it... the 40k universe >>>>>>>>>>>>> the HW universe.

You havent played dow. If dow was balanced it would be the best rts ever.

Polaris

there will be no hw3. the lock has been seperated from the key, and even if VU got somebody else to program it or sold the license to THQ, they've already killed the story line by deviating so far from the original homeworld plot. this has been discussed dozens of times on RN, so why bother here?
all we can hope for is a new 3d space RTS (after all, relic still owns the engine) under a new name, possibly WH:40k
although recent talks with UberJumper would say even that is unlikely

i agree but i still have to beleive that there is going to be a homeworld3 otherwise there is nothing else to beleive in. lol.
i would like to see another rts space game like homeworld come out but im afraid that homeworld is one of the only games in that specific genre that has actually been released successfully.

IMO, space RTS kicks any 2D RTS' ass without any question. The concept itself is great. It just needs some good dynamics to make the gameplay enjoyable. Add good graphics and sound, and you have an excellent game. I mean, HW was the game of the year, HW2 is much better in almost every aspect. HW2 interface is very solid, it can be used as a base for any other space RTS. I don't understand why in the world there wouldn't be another one out sometime soon.

Not really, caps lock means moron in most cases. Of course, I'm not trying to imply that you are a moron, but it doesn't give a very good first impression, especially since we're the guys that are getting you into this joint in the first place.

You have to admit the designers of HW2 left the "door open" for a sequel game with the discovery of the interconnected hyperspace portals in that little vid at the end of the sp game. Now that would be an incredible sp game and the plot would be limitless. Its got to be in the back of someone's mind on the development team, rights and marketing aside.

Scorpion
May 16, 2005, @ 08:12 PM
yeh i no whats up with that? they also started off the storyline with something about s'jet so i dont know how they are going to get thyemselves out of that mess if they dont hold the liscence to s'jet. it means that they can never truly make a sequel without previous permission. its so crazy it makes you think that maybe the preceeding corporation made it that way in some kind of sly trick so that future companys wouldnt be able to rip them off in the future if the owner died in some freak accident or sumthing. someone must really have it in for homeworld. maybe there will be another game that is exactly the same as homeworld but with different names for everything like they have done countless times with games like flight simulator.

HW2 was a pretty crappy game, DoW is a terrible game, and Relic is now a terrible developer given their recent track record. They haven't made a good game since Homeworld.

Juggalo

DoW was alright for like the first 3 months, then it got REALLY boring.

Scorpion

hw2 was a good game but maybe the classics will always be better... who knows.

No, it really wasnt. At best it was decent game with terrible support, a tiny multiplayer community, and repetitive gameplay in 1v1s, meaning it would never gain popularity.

The CEO of Relic Entertainment and originator of Homeworld, Alex Garden, has left Relic and THQ to pursue other projects

Homeworld is the intellectual property of one said Alex Garden and up here that is actually a law. Aside from the fact that whoever and whatever owns the rights. This is precisely why there will NEVER be another, he is no longer with the company. He would have too sign off on it for them to make another. Funny Relic still has offices in the tower next to ours.

yeh but that isnt right because he was working for them at the time so anything he comes up with during that time belongs to them and that is exactly why they pay people to do these things.
so homeworld is a corporate invention not any one persons. it is infact the property of relic and they aint gonna move dey lazy ass'!
