Guildwars is pretty cool, there were some free open stress tests that Drunk and I and a few other TLSC partook of. The basic gist of it is it's a solid MMORPG, perhaps not mind-boggling or anything, but with very beautiful landscapes and decent teamwork-oriented gameplay. The kicker, for me, which will probably result in me getting the game, is the one-time 49.99 purchase cost. There is no monthly fee for this game; the project is apparently exceedingly well-funded, and they have hyped it up with their stress tests so it is getting a lot of publicity for purchases, and they plan on continuing to support their staff and REGULAR updates with expansions AND through other software-production ventures.

can't be true. A games company supporting their very own game? Unheard of!

It's done by the people who built and maintained Battle.net for Blizzard, so these guys have a track record of excellent support and upkeep.

Also played in the WPE and the last weekend beta event. Too really confuse things I was in the World of Warcraft beta. Well I liked GW so much I uninstalled the WoW beta. Went out and bought a pre-order for GW and now take part in the weekend beta events. Which happen once a month. I like GW and will be buying it. The PvP being a choice is actually a good idea. I am sure there will be changes to the whole set up but non the less choice is always good.

The pvp setup in wow is pretty much FvF.

And when you raid another town, it ends up being much like the GvG battles in GW. Many times on a much larger scale. And the actual PvP isn't that different. Many similar abilities and such. Combat itself feels very similar.

Then I'd say go for the much cheaper game that you don't have to pay monthly for ;)

Monthly subscription = more guaranteed updates and such.

If your not paying GW monthly, then they are not forced (or persuaded by money to) update the game whatsoever. You could go months and months with nothing, since they cannot justify having a team working on the game with no income from it aside from the initial retail purchase.

...But you dont have to pay a monthly fee.

Yea, true.

But you also might have to wait months for an imbalance/bug/whatever to be fixed.

Not trying to say GW is bad or anything, just trying to point out the benefits of pay to play

Look, it boils down to this. If I pay 50 bucks for Guildwars, and in 6 months I hate it b/c of no patches, then fine, I paid 50 bucks and that's it. I find that rare, b/c they're promising as MUCH support as a monthly-pay game.

If you play WoW for 6 months and then another awesome game comes out, you've paid 60 dollars for it, and have still moved on to another primary game, just like me, but you've paid more. Plus, if I spend a year on guildwars I pay 50 bucks, if you spend a year on wow you pay 120 bucks. Face it -- for the most part, people move on to new games; why pay literally hundreds of dollars for something that is guaranteed not to be permanent, when you could do basically the same experience (basically) for one flat rate and nothing else?
