I always thought they did a good job. What are your thoughts on it? Condies not leaving, but Powell is, I always like Powell

Delta, don't be ignorant. Bush will not be reinstating the draft. KERRY was in favor of expanding the armed forces (though not verbally did he personally mention draft), and the draft itself was SUGGESTED by Democrats, and VOTED DOWN by Republicans (and most of the Democrats).

Many parents today were around for the Vietnam draft and are bitter towards the idea. Us crazy youth aren't too fond of it either.
There won't be a draft since it would be political suicide for whichever party favors it.
btw MVB: That crazy Charles Rangel or whatever his name is brought that legislation forward so, in his words, the Republicans could show how they stand on the issue. Not even Rangel or his supporters voted for it, even though they introduced it, and all together the draft bill was defeated 402-2.

Aye, stealth, I am aware of that. It is, however, true that on the issue of the military John Kerry was in favor of a home defense branch of the military for community armed services, and also was in favor of expanding the # of personnel in the military, whereas Bush was in favor of spending that money on better wages and materials for our soldiers, instead of putting MORE lower-paid and less well-equipped soldiers into the field.

Oh and back to the topic...
These resignations don't necessarily have to do with these people being disgusted/dissatisfied with Bush as president, but being a cabinet member, while very influential, does not pay much. They are losing considerable finances by not working in the private sector, so I'm sure that can explain most of the resignations.
Damn, Colin Powell is 67?

I thought Powell was one of the better members of Bush's cabinet. A very good man leaving his office.

I'm amazed Justice; I would have thought you would have desperately tried to prove it was because of Bush, rather than the reason Tom gave.

No.
He's a good person. Although some of his decisions, in my view, were questionable, he's honest, hardworking, and experienced. Bush isn't the reason Powell resigned. Some things can be blamed on Bush, but some things can't, as well.
cheers, and

Im going to miss Powell, But... guess whos the next secretary of state? Condie, and shes the second black american to hold the position and the second woman to ever hold the position. Bush is breaking records here. I have no doubt that she is highly qualifyed for the job.

IMHO, Powell was just the member of the previous Bush cabinet with less characterizing traits. Looks like he was moderate out of mediocrity, and not because of political reasons: of course I don't know his background so I might be mistaken.
One fact is sure, many people hate Bush but few do even know Powell here. He was secretary of state, so he should have had some influence, or renown, but if you look at European newscasts there are far more mentions of Rumsfield, or C. Rice, than Powell.
Powell has one big drawback, he looks like he has no leadership skills nor charisma, and so he was not suited for his job, which is diplomacy, IMHO.

Powell was also a dissenter in the administration. He wanted to push the Iraq war back to 2005 after the election. However, the man was head of the Joint Chiefs of staff, an Officer and a damn fine leader. Charisma might be a drawback, but i always liked him.

I think powell was just really unhappy with his job... remember, his first big deal was getting the French to support the war... The French actually said yes... they said htey would would support it... powell went to lunch, and while at lunch the french said they would NEVER support any such action... back stabbed powell and caught us with our pants down... it does no good to point this out in the public arena... all that matters is offical statements...
Ever seen powell talking to these people?... he looked like he wanted to shoot himself...
