View Full Version : THE END OF LIFE AS WE KNOW IT!

Actually ... assuming we don't gas ourselves, blow up the planet with nukes, get hit by a giant comet, cook ourselves in global warming, or unpredictably crash into the sun, we'll all die in FOUR billion years. But, by then, humanity will be dead and nothing will remain of our civilization. But the squid people's archaeologists will be studying remains of ancient Homo sapiens sapiens cities.
Yeah, that's right. Evolutionary scientists have confirmed -- "land" squids, breathing oxygen and standing at around 20 feet tall, with multiple arms/legs reminiscient of tentacles, will be the Earth's next intelligent life form.

Wrong as usual justice.
In one billion years, the Sun will be producing just enough heat to cause all of the water in the oceans to evaporate into water vapor, causing a runaway greenhouse effect and destroying all life on the planet.
The Earth will NOT be consumed by the Sun. Ever. Mercury will, MAYBE Venus, but not the Earth.

And back to the original topic,
I think in a billion years we would have had a spacestation built, or have moved to mars, or an other galaxy.
I mean in 100 years we went from first making automobles, to going to the moon.

expect this planet to be very fucked up before 2100
as for a billion, you think this rock will still be here, let alone any trace of our existence

Nov 14, 2004, @ 12:32 AM
ok get rid of a billion then.

Demon, humanity will not exist in a billion or even a million years, whether you like it or not. The human species is only a few hundred thousand years old as is, and in another few hundred thousand years will be something entirely different.
God knows what'll be roaming the Earth in a million years or a billion.

Its hard to think that are species is going to end.
Justice
Nov 14, 2004, @ 05:05 PM
actually.
humanity will be wiped out in the near future. It could be anywhere from a hundred years from now, when global warming finally destroys biodiversity, or it could be millions of years from now, when a new carnivorous animal evolves into Earth specifically designed to hunt humanity to extinction. You never know.

Global warming is a theory at best. Don't place your faith in it.

Well you guzy ever watch babylon five? Well have the technology whether evolved or not to go elseplaces. Why do people think the species will ever completley end ? thats not gonna happen even if we wouldnt regognize ourselves a billino yrs from now if it came from us then it is us.

I see the destruction of humanity happen in only several ways.
1. Natural Disaster (global warming, asteroid strike, volcanic eruptions, massive tectonic instability, disease, etc.)
2. War (aliens, nukes, rogue states, terrorism, etc.)
3. Evolution
at least, these are the 3 things we'd have trouble adapting to. Continued leaps and bounds in science and the flexibility of the human race will lower the probability of some of these things happening, but the spectre of war will always remain quite real.

From what I remember, the sun will supernova, expanding to a size that will consume the first 5 planets in the system, and then return to it's previous size as a dead star.
Another theory, which I explained to MVB one night, is that scientist believe that Mars's magnetic field deteriated over time, and becuase there was no magnetic field to hold the atmosphere in place, the atmosphere was gradually blown away from solar wind. One scientist, who is an expert in magnetic fields, has studied certain elements of clay pots that date back before Christ. In soil, these elements zig zag and random angles when looked at under a microscope. When super heated and then allowed to cool, these elements all align in a certain parallel pattern, the same pattern everytime. This pattern is caused by the magnetic field of the earth. By studying pots from before Christ up until today, he has discoverd by compairing the angles the elements align that over the past 5000 years, the earths magnetic field has deteriated at a steady rate, hence the earth could suffer the same fate as Mars. This was shown on a documentory on the Discovery Channel about 2 months ago.

Partially right Mighty. :) The sun won't go supernova, as that only happens to supergiants. Instead, as the hydrogen in its core is used up, the Sun will begin to fuse heavier elements, causing its size to increase about 10x what it is now and enter a Red Giant phase.
The only planets that will be consumed will be Mercury and maybe Venus (I said that above methinks... *scrolls up*... yep :)). While the Sun will be larger, its mass will be lower, so the planets will move out to wider orbits (so the Earth won't be swallowed, nor will any others). The Moons of Jupiter might be appropriate for life to form as well.
Over time, the Sun will eventually lose all of its outer layers (as gravity pwns it), so a planetary nebula will exist for around 100 thousand years or so. In the middle will be a dead sun, a white dwarf type star, which will slowly cool and cool until it is completely dark (but will still be there).
The planets will still orbit, but the solar system will be extremely cold and dark. Not a happy ending for our little system.

Yes, but the red giant will render Earth uninhabitable. Imagine that heat and proximity to the Sun.

Yes. But:
I said above that even before the Sun becomes a red giant its luminosity will increase gradually over time, throwing off-balance the precarious system we have here on Earth, rendering it uninhabitable.

yeah but what do you think of or have you heard about the magnetic field theory of Mars and how it relates to earth?

Never heard of that, must be too complex for astr101. ;)
Justice

Nah.
Chances of that happening are slim. But, the Earth's magnetic poles are going to flip sometime in the near future, which could call for some interesting weather patterns.

Plus, no complicated formulas or anything.
