I can only hope that this new russian loonacy can be aborted before it does any more harm... it will already overshadow it's people for a decade at least.

I've always thought that Putin is not that bad for Russia. There is little information about upper house members and their current thoughts. Perhaps they're exerting some bad ideas on Putin. Until now there have been improvements in general state of Russia. If the executives do decide to start going backwards, I think that Michael would be correct - people will tolerate it only for so long, most likely leading to another revolt.

he is a former KGB high official
i think you can't climb that high without :
a strong belief in military discipline
strong love for russia
being intelligent
a flexible moral belief
that leads me too two situations
a) he was smart enough to rise to power and is now using his "good" talents to "save" russia .
b) he and his group are using the illusion of democracy to blind the west and recieve funds to disarm while they are rebuilding .
now what situation is more likely ??

I'm not going to expect a brute and a tyrant to have the people's "best wishes" in mind. Lenin wanted that... fuck that. He's playing king and there are VERY few men that have the good nature to do that properly. It's not about being intellegent, wise, or charming. It's about being sincerly good.

These qualities don't lead to such things. He's shutting down frees speech... it's just wrong.

Russia will certainly expand again. It has no choice. However, it is likely to kill eastern Europeans and Asians first, people that the western world doesn't care about.

First, we do care.
Second, Russia knows it.
