Relax, dude, I'm not insulting you or anything.

I think AVI is something you can save to your harddrive (like DivX movies), whereas DVD you need a DVD player to pop it in.

Quality ...

Not sure, I think DVD's would offer better quality picture, but I've seen damn good quality DivX videos before.

DVD's have a higher quality, though DivX and AVI files can be damn near as close depending on the quality of the source, and the selection at the time it was saved.

Karmashock
Feb 20, 2005, @ 04:34 AM
divx can have equal or better quality... it can easily be just as good as DVD at half the size.

The biggest difference between teh two is that DVD is easy to decode and DIVX requires more processing power.

IIRC DVD is less quality than a true high quality uncompressed AVI file, because DVD's get compressed to hell. I know a dvd would only hold like 30 minutes of uncompressed AVI file when I was making a home movie.

I'm a nub about this stuff, but isn't DVD = mpeg3 format?

Karmashock
Feb 20, 2005, @ 05:27 AM
DVD is Mpeg 2
music is Mpeg 3
divx is Mpeg 4

The original AVI format is a Microsoft's Video for Windows standard. Now the .avi extension is used on pretty much every Mpeg-4(and even some others) compression method available, and most players are smart enough to figure out the format even if the extension doesn't match the compression. For practical reasons, AVI files can only be played on your PC, while DVD disks can be played in your stand-alone dvd player(although I've heard there are some DVD players that can play DivX files too).

And if I'm thinking correctly, I believe Mpeg-3 was designed to handle HDTV signals, the work on it was discontinued. You might be thinking of Mpeg-1 layer 3 format, comonly known as MP3 format for the music files. There are some other formats of music out there, too : MIDI and WAV were the two most common formats used for stand-alone sound.

Shackled Phoenix
Feb 20, 2005, @ 04:17 PM
That's 90% likely to be a codec problem. On the offchance you've actually got kazaa still (kazaa is eeeviiiillll) just do a software search for "ever codec imaginable" That's the package i use and i've yet to find one not included.

Otherwise i dunno any good places to find codec packs because that one's always worked for me.

Cleary

No, music is Mpeg 1 - layer 3

The MP3 codec has been around forever. Well before Mpeg 2.

There are some players that can play divx... but not many...

Also, there are some superior formats... mkv is the best so far... its higher compression then divx... though only slightly... slightly higher cpu usage too. Mkv is nice because the video file has most of the features of a DVD... multi audio tracks... subtitles...

And if I'm thinking correctly, I believe Mpeg-3 was designed to handle HDTV signals, the work on it was discontinued. I don't think so... I think its just audio.

billy,
download and install this
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm

it has basically all the codecs... ever... and even a pretty good free player that you'd have to pay 30 dollars to get in any other program.

It's a big download, but its worth it. Install that and you'll not have to worry abotu codecs for a long long long time.

mpeg is audio

What? Do you actually know what you're talking about Billy?
Mpeg is a codec. It can be used to encode audio or video.
eg. Mpeg 1 - layer 3 = MP3 used for audio files
or. Mpeg 4 which is a codec used to make audio and video files.

Thanks Justice for that link. :thumbup
