It turns out that the list I worked on before is illegal (the Venerable Dreadnoughts ARE 0-1.) I revised the list but kept the overall theme, with one unit of claws being replaced by a leman russ. I also dropped the number of pods from 3 to 1 to get in what I wanted. I know it's probably not quite as good, and I get one less scoring unit, but I really want to try out the tank and it does fill the same role (anti-infantry.) Anyway, here's the revised list. Please feel free to rip it apart.

HQ - Wolf Guard Battle Leader - Frost Axe, Stormshield, Meltabombs, Wolf Pelt, Wolf Tail Talisman - 99

as I sit here looking at my own list instead of doing the mountain of work I have. I was wondering if it would be worth getting rid of the meltabombs on my 2 characters, the Wolf tail talisman, (practically useless anyway), the extra armor off my Venerable Dreadnought, and 1 plasma pistol from my GH to upgrade my regular dreadnought to an Ironclad?

You don't need flamers. Your troops in close combat are anti-infantry. Stop giving them anti-infantry weapons. The meltaguns are purely so that you are able to deal with mech heavy armies instead of getting laughed at by them after your dreds are popped.

Give all your blood claws meltas.

The flamers are a waste.

Get rid of the Leman Russ, it's a waste. I know you want to use it but it's terrible. What's more, you gave it a lascannon, which is like giving a unit of sternguard a missile launcher. What the heck is the point of an anti-tank weapon on a tank full of heavy bolters and autocannons? More importantly, why are you spending TWO HUNDRED AND FIVE POINTS on something that will sit completely isolated from every other unit in your army and kill a couple of infantrymen?

Get rid of the Russ, upgrade the Dred to an ironclad w/ his points, get your flamers turned into meltaguns, and add drop pods for all your dreds so you can stick to that original plan also.

If you took your current list, dropped the Russ, added meltaguns (what 4 points more each or something?) and added drop pods to all dreds plus changed reg dred to ironclad, I suspect you'd still have points left over even ... which makes me go to the 10 wolves you're missing from your original plan. You've got only 50 power armored marines, none of which have feel no pain or anytihng. The more the merrier :)

Still, Venerable + 2 Ironclads in Drop Pods (or 3 even) + 50 power armored marines is a pretty potent punch.

The Russ is bad, though ... like, megabad. It'll never earn its points back, has no real purpose other than its "I miss half the time" lascannon, etc. Boo on it IMO.

Alright you re-convinced me of the uselessness of the leman russ (although it is BS 4 so it's a miss 1/3 the time Lascannon!) Also, I am slightly terrified of BS 3 for the Claw Meltaguns.

Reworked it a bit. Although, now the Grey Hunters don't have power fists and they are riding in the 3rd drop pod for some later game anti-vehicle wherever it's needed.

Are space wolfs allowed Ironclads? I thought thier was a restriction on which items they can take from the marine codex?

I've been wondering that myself.

The list is, IMO, about as good as you can reasonably get it for Space Wolves. You've got tons of close combat gribblyness backed up by plenty of melta redundancy to deal with nastier av 14 all around type vehicles. Plus, you've got lots of threats you'll be dropping on your opponent very early, testing his ability to effectively target out what he needs to kill and when he needs to kill it.

according to the FAQ we can take Ironclad Dreadnoughts, its the same as taking the different variants of Landraiders. I looked it up on some other sites too and that seems to be the consensus.

I was just thinking about this and wanted to see what people thought about making changes to the list to get an extra dreadnought. What do you think?
